Major Triad Extensions over Dominant 7th Chord

Hey guys,

Here’s a slightly different approach to formulating chords. In this approach we take each note of the diminished chord as a root note for our major triad extension over the dominant 7th chord.

Check out the video I put together for you, which has a clear explanation of this idea and what it sounds like. I also use it to create some interesting lines for soloing.

It takes the familiar sound of a simple dominant 7th and a major triad and puts them together as a poly chord to create some amazing harmonic extensions and alterations but in a way our ear can nicely understand. I believe Herbie Hancock first used this idea with Miles back in the 60’s.

Have fun!
